Week 3 The Goods, the breakthroughs, and the not so goods.

Week three was an interesting week and I have experienced enough to write about each beat (Women's wellness and toxic relationships), and my thoughts on week three.  Regarding wellness- I’ve begun a modality new to me- Pilates.  I’ve heard of Pilates over the years but for some reason never tried it.  That seems to be a current theme in my life at the moment… doing new things that I’ve thought of or previously encountered but never actually attempted. I’ ve learned about yoga although I haven’t really kept up with it.  I must say, I love doing Pilates and I am really seeing the gains.    It’s almost like a mixture of yoga and regular exercise.    It’s perfect for me because its low impact yet still yields big results.  I don't like high intensity workouts, but yoga was a little too slow for me.  I still have goals for the stillness of yoga but I am already seeing the gains from doing a nifty little Pilates glute workout called...

Journalism 250 week 2

As two roles around, I did find myself with a few challenges.  However these challenges were not necessarily regarding class.   I recently began doing a paid internship in order to complete my Human Services associates degree at a new establishment in town called Hale Pono- a youth shelter.  I am really grateful to be there as it aligns with my career goals, and even my health and wellness goals (its purpose is more of a youth healing sanctuary and the founders are keen on applying various healing modalities while the youth are in our care.)  I get to cook the youth healthy meals, lead them in exercise and yoga, do art with them, and more.  I was thinking of writing an article for our UH Student News highlighting Maui’s new youth shelter with a call to action as they are interested in finding more youth shelter workers from our human services degree program. This is my first job since the birth of my recent child who is now one years old and finding balance has ...

Post one: My thoughts on week one

In the first week of this class, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was excited. When I saw that we would be creating our own blog, I couldn’t help but think that this is something I’ve been wanting to do for so long, but for some reason never gave it a shot.  In the past, I felt like I had trouble nailing down a niche but somehow the way Lantana put it (to find your own beat) made it make more sense.  I began to think about what kind of things I’d like to write about.  I thought about what topics I am interested in, what things I like, and even what I browse in my daily life when naturally scrolling the web. I asked myself what do I talk about often when I’m talking with my friends or what do people look to me for answers for? So I narrowed it down to my two beats.  Firstly, I’m a wellness junkie, although it’s a bit tougher now that I have a toddler and I’m a single parent, I normally like to stay fit and in shape.  I am knowledgeable about nutri...
