Journalism 250 week 2
As two roles around, I did find myself with a few challenges. However these challenges were not necessarily regarding class. I recently began doing a paid internship in order to complete my Human Services associates degree at a new establishment in town called Hale Pono- a youth shelter. I am really grateful to be there as it aligns with my career goals, and even my health and wellness goals (its purpose is more of a youth healing sanctuary and the founders are keen on applying various healing modalities while the youth are in our care.) I get to cook the youth healthy meals, lead them in exercise and yoga, do art with them, and more. I was thinking of writing an article for our UH Student News highlighting Maui’s new youth shelter with a call to action as they are interested in finding more youth shelter workers from our human services degree program.
This is my first job since the birth of my recent child who is now one years old and finding balance has been a bit tough with the hours I work, but each day I am finding better ways to maintain that balance. Finding ways to maintain balance is an essential part of wellness that I am working to harness. I have a goal this week of creating a schedule and routine to follow. Tune in next week to see if this really happened. I’ve also begun to work out, and am feeling those first workout pains. I know this isn’t a diary, but I am tracking my progress in regards to one of my beats which is wellness. The goal is to get my Rihanna bod back! Stay tuned.
One thing that was nice and synchronistic was that on the one assignment where we closed our eyes and chose a place, I landed on Makawao Towns yoga spot, Mangala yoga, a spot which I had been wanting to check out but never made the time to. I will be checking it out now and that totally aligns with my wellness pursuits falling under spiritual and physical wellness. Yoga is also a form of balance in motion and I'm hoping it will contribute to my pursuit of balance.
This week's reading was very enlightening. It shed light on a brief history of the evolution of journalism and I did find it interesting and engaging to learn of how far it has come, and also how people pretty much fought against totalitarian regimens and journalists' role in the pursuit of freedoms. It makes me feel even more grateful and empowered to write, knowing that others before me have fought for this freedom. It made me think of how still though, in today's day in other countries journalists are killed for writing and sharing truths. I recently learned of a story of the bureau chief of Al Jazeera. His eldest son, and in fact his whole family was recently killed in an air strike in Gaza. He had been a target for years for publishing many truths in his region. We are lucky to have the freedoms we do, and this makes me want to write more.
